Andrew Loomis

Andrew Loomis wrote some of the best art instruction books ever, however as you may know, they are no longer in print and nearly impossible to find. SaveLoomis.org is a great resource, with html versions of all six of his books. Pdf versions of the books used to be available, but have become very hard to locate. I was fortunate enough to secure pdf versions of all six books and have since put them on my server for others to download and learn from. To my knowledge all of these books, which were published between 1939-'61, are in the public domain and thus are free to distribute.

To download a .rar file containing all six books click here, otherwise click the image of the book you are interested in.

With Andrew Loomis's books costing $150.00, your
labour of altruism is truly remarkable. Even Walter-Foster sells two 32pg versions of Faces, and Figures, selling for $8.95 each. I for one didn't even know about Andrew Loomis until I happened upon your site. You have brought his love, his unique mastery of art to me in a way I would never would have known were it not for your efforts. Thank-you.

thing. Happy Holidays and Blessed Be.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for taking the trouble of formating all these loomis books. I have a few of the originals but the pdfs are really handy. Hey, I work in animation as well so if I can be of help, please send me an e-mail. I have worked in the business in Toronto for longer then I would like to remember. Most of my work is of the 2d variety.

Thanks again,

Awesome of you to put up the loomis PDF's... that's some bloody good karma flooding your way. I like your dedication to animation. Few people I think recognize the steepness of that hill, it's insane really. I am rededicating myself back to the basics of animation after somehow having ended up in visual effects many years after film school. I went to film school to become an animator of characters, and now find myself in yet another season of scifi work doing set extensions, blowing things up, etc. but no characters :(
Keep fighting onward, it's worth it. The animation mentor stuff sounds great, I like that people from all over the world can do it. Good for them. Physical film schools are just not what so many people need, or don't need at the time, especially considering the cost.
Thanks for the inspiration...

Hello ! Thanks so much for hosting these books ! I have been looking for a way to get started in art, and these books are often cited as the best available. I actually saw a used, run down Loomis book once (Drawing the Head and Hands), but decided to wait - and when I went back to the used bookshop it was gone ! :-( Since then I've been hunting high and low.... Thanks a lot !

P.S. Do you know of any other good online resources for artists ? My focus is on digital art at the moment....

Thanks for continuing to host these PDF files. While I have all these books -- either in original or photocopy -- it took a lot of searching and a good chunk of money to put them on my shelves. It's a crime that they are no longer in print, as I consider them essential books for anyone wanting to learn to draw or paint. I've pointed many of my students to these books, and those who take the time to study them will be better artists for it. Your posting of the books allows me to use them in my class more effectively, as now all my students have access to them without having to spend a fortune on eBay or with used book dealers (as I did!).
